Healing with Loss

We are all deeply touched by loss. 

Loss of a loved one, our sense of who we are, a perceived future, a loss of security or of health. 

Loss of a sense of humanity. 

In my experience, the only way to truly heal the wounds of grief and loss is to move toward them. 

To give them the space they are so desperately asking for. 

Every twinge in the chest. Each punch in the stomach. Every cry, “This is wrong!” 

This is you, asking for your attention. 

Come down from the mind. 

Come down into your body. 

Place a hand on that pleading space. 

Find a friend, a journal, a counselor, a healer. Find your yoga mat. 

Share your experience. Witness it. 

Recognize that no path home toward healing is the same.

Allow it to be whatever works for you. 

When my brother unexpectedly passed away, my path back to myself was through months of meditation and journaling, and eventually a week-long Yoga Nidra retreat. When a patient I was working with took his own life, healing began through compassionate energetic work with a Reiki Master, which, seven years later, continues to unravel many of the deep losses in my life. 

No one can promise you that the sadness will go away. Sadness is a natural and important reaction to loss. It means we had something worth losing. 

But what I can promise is that life, and therefore loss,  will continue to happen. And, as healers it is imperative that we commit to our own healing

When we honor our own wounds, only then do we have space to hold our clients and colleagues, and ultimately the world around us, with the same healing energy. 

When you commit to honoring your own losses, you have space to help others meet theirs with grace and compassion.
