Are You an Empath?
Can you sense the vibe of a room immediately when you walk into it?
Do you know what someone is feeling without them saying anything, sometimes even before they are aware of it?
Of course you do! These qualities are likely part of what led you to choosing the career path you did.
Did you also know that these qualities are hallmarks of being an empath? Along with:
Feeling different from others
Being extra sensitive to noise, light, food, smells
Feeling emotions more deeply that most, some may call you “dramatic”
Being intuitive and/or having premonitions
Being easily overstimulated and needing space to be alone
Recharging in nature
Sound familiar?
It wasn’t until I was already burned out from being a psychologist that I learned I was an empath after quite literally stumbling across the work of Dr. Judith Orloff, MD - a psychiatrist out of UCLA who has devoted her career to supporting empaths and intuitive clinicians.
I realized that a significant portion of the depressed mood, apathy, and irritability I was experiencing was actually not even mine.
Once I was able to clear the energy and emotions I was naturally picking up from others and learn how to shield myself from absorbing more, I have been able to walk through life with so much more light, ease, and joy. I also gained clarity about the steps that I needed to take to honor my empathic and intuitive abilities, while maintaining my wellness as a healer.
I teach many of my clients these same vital skills, because, of course, many clinicians are empaths as well.
For a very practical and tremendously validating resource, I highly recommend the Empath’s Survival Guide, by Dr. Orloff. For many of my clients (and myself), this book has become a textbook of how to walk through the world as an empath, while honoring our gifts and protecting our vitality.
And, of course, I am here to help ❤️
It is an honor to walk this path with you.
Love and gratitude, Caitlin
