How Do You Prepare for Work?

I used to believe that in order to be a “good” therapist I had to spend the minutes prior to meeting with a client or colleague reviewing notes and practicing scripts from evidence-based manuals.

I had an image of a devoted scientist-practitioner as one who stays up into the late hours of the night reading journal articles before going to sleep.

Now… I just go to sleep.

I have learned that the best way for me to show up for those I work with is to do whatever allows me to be fully present.

Now, I meditate, practice a few yoga postures, or put my feet into the earth prior to sessions. I often take phone meetings with colleagues while walking in the woods by my house.

This is not something I would have readily admitted in professional company in the past. I believed I was doing something forbidden and the deep shame I felt kept me from being honest.

I do review notes from prior sessions and meetings, but just enough to jog my memory. I trust too that I will recall anything that is vital, as present moment awareness improves memory.

A lifetime of awakening and change can happen between sessions. So,I have learned that my time is so much better spent getting present, getting out of my mind and into my heart, so that I may truly meet whoever I am with with grace and compassion

How do you best prepare for your work? It might be going for a run, taking a few deep breaths, dancing, or singing. The list is endless, and YOU get to decide.

I am excited to hear what you come up with!

With love,

Caitlin
