Remember Your Light
As we arrive at the shortest day of the year - for those of us in the northern hemisphere - and the light becomes more dim, I am reminded that there are times when our light, the light always burning inside of us, grows dim as well.
We might feel down, sluggish, caught up in self-doubt, worried about judgment from others.
The ancient yogis believed that there exists a deepest part of us that is already whole, already healed…
And it is our stories, rules, and habits that keep us away from that knowing and that remembering.
Especially during the times of overstimulation, stress, busyness, and pressure that this time of year can bring, we are understandably more susceptible to believing thoughts that we “are not good enough” or “are not doing enough” or “don’t have enough time” or “are not festive enough.”
And, still, the light never goes out.
Even though the inside of my home may not resemble Magnolia Home and the outside is not draped with greenery and lights, my light still burns.
Some things that I do to rekindle my light (or simply remember that it is there) are:
Make sure I am carving out time for myself (present wrapping can wait an hour)
Go into nature
Watch the sunrise and/or sunset
Notice the stillness of bare branches in the hush of dusk
Take epsom salt baths with lavender
Read a cozy book on my couch next to a candle
I allow myself to be quiet and still.
Because when I am quiet, I can remember that the light is always burning inside of me.
Love and light to you and yours!
