You are Already Spiritual

Back in 2015, a supervisor reflected to me that I was a very spiritual person.

This comment caught me totally off guard, despite having a dedicated meditation practice for five years and a yoga practice for 15 - I had even completed a yoga teacher training program.

I was surprised when my supervisor referred to me as “spiritual” because I unconsciously believed that I needed a certification or degree or a concrete, dedicated practice with clear beliefs, in order to call myself a spiritual person.

I was also a little afraid of being “found out” in a squarely western medical center, by a fellow clinician I admired.

Spirituality can be a deeply personal experience. It’s not black and white, like when someone ascribes to a particular religion or dogma, though individuals can be both religious and spiritual.

So for many of us who grew up with an external understanding of who they were - labels and roles that were passed down onto us - being called a spiritual person, or even taking on that label for oneself, can feel confusing and wrong.

At the time, I hadn’t given myself permission to explore that I might already be spiritual.

Consider that you might already be too.

Spirituality typically involves exploring what gives you meaning and purpose in your life and connecting with something greater than yourself.

And spiritual connection will naturally look different for each of us.

We don’t even have to give that “something greater” a name - though choosing a reference point such as “the universe” or “spirit” or “humankind” can be helpful for our minds. That connection to something greater which gives you meaning may be through nature, painting, music, cooking, yoga, singing, dancing, meditation, journaling, prayer, crystals, channeling, Oracle cards, or gazing into the vastness of the sky.

It may be through kindness, awe, service, wonder, or creation.

When we nurture our spiritual connection, we also cultivate more ease, vibrancy, and love in our lives - it's been said that despair and loneliness are actually spiritual problems.

So consider… what does spirituality mean to you? What spiritual practices are important in your life?

I would love to hear what shows up for you! Let me know.

It's an honor to walk alongside you.

With love and light,

Caitlin
